چکیده

In this paper, we study a sample of 65 short duration bursts contained in the 3B catalogue. We fit the time profiles of these GRBs with lognormal functions and study various temporal properties. In most of the multi-peaked bursts, our analysis leads to a statistical evidence for the evolution of temporal asymmetry in individual pulses i.e. subsequent pulses in a GRB, on an average, tend to be more symmetric. Using a peak asymmetry evolution parameter, we find that 90% of short duration GRBs with 3 or more peaks exhibit the above trend individually. [email protected] [email protected] [email protected]

Properties of the intermediate type of gamma-ray bursts

Gamma-ray bursts can be divided into three groups ("short", "intermediate", "long") with respect to their durations. The third type of gamma-ray bursts as known has the intermediate duration. We show that the intermediate group is the softest one. An anticorrelation between the hardness and the duration is found for this subclass in contrast to the short and long groups.

Feeding Compact Objects: Accretion on All Scales

By collecting 17 short gamma-ray bursts with necessary data, we find a correlation of Lp ∝ E .7 p ,i , which is very consistent with that derived from a greatly expanded sample of 148 Swift long gamma-ray bursts. It is argued that the radiation mechanism of both long and short gamma-ray bursts should be similar, i.e., of quasi-thermal origin caused by the photosphere and the dissipation occurri...

Red-shift Distribution of Gamma-ray Bursts and Their Progenitors

Gamma ray bursts have been divided into two classes, long-soft gamma ray burst and short-hard gamma ray burst according to the bimodal distribution in duration time. Due to the harder spectrum and the lack of afterglows of short-hard bursts in optical and radio observations, different progenitors for short-hard bursts and long-soft bursts have been suggested. Based on the X-ray afterglow observ...

On the Bimodal Distribution of Gamma-Ray Bursts

Kouveliotou et al. (1993) recently confirmed that gamma-ray bursts are bimodal in duration. In this paper we compute the statistical properties of the short (≤ 2 s) and long (> 2 s) bursts using a method of analysis that makes no assumption regarding the location of the bursts, whether in the Galaxy or at a cosmological distance. We find the 64 ms channel on BATSE to be more sensitive to short ...

The Variability of Gamma-ray Bursts That Create Afterglows

We consider whether the variability properties of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) that produce bright optical and longer wavelength transient afterglows (A-GRBs) are the same as a larger, inclusive sample of bright, long-duration GRBs, selected only by their γ-ray emission. This sample may include a significant population of physically distinct “dark” or “faint-afterglow” GRBs with different variabilit...
